Greece 2011 - Day 12

Well today is our last day on the island of Crete!
After breakfast and paying all bills we decided not to go to the beach today but drive up to the Lasithiou plateu. It's a plain up in the mountains where Zeus was born. It's at a height of over 800 meters!
The drive up was great.

On dropping down to the plain we saw signs for off-road tours!!!
Book me in for next time!
The view onto the plain was super!

We stopped to have lunch in Psycho - the village where the cave of Zeus is.

Then we drove up to the carpark to go and look at the cave...

But it was closed - due to strikes!

Anna, Stef and I walked up anyways!

All the way to the house at the top... But it was defiantly closed!

The views from up there were lovely too.

So then we headed off for the harbour.

On the way to Heraklion we stopped at the coast... for about 30 seconds!
Far too touristy for us!

So we drove directly onto the harbour. And then walked into town.

We took a bite to eat and a drink at the 'newscafe' where they have fast internet! And a funny menu card...

The coffees were done nicely too.

Greece 2011 - Day 11

The morning in Moires. Buying fruit, shoes and Gyros & Chips!

After Moires we drove down to Matala and a little up into the hills look at the Chapel Stefan.

Down in Matala there is a carved tree. Looks real cool. I believe it was made for the hippy party earlier this year.

There's still lots of hippies around!

In the evening we ate out at 'Mike's Place'. The food was very good - BUT - the owner is VERY VERY VERY stressful! He clearly gives you the message: "eat and go! NEXT!"
No pictures, battery was flat.

Greece 2011 - Day 9

Blue skies.....
But it's still time to leave Sougia and head onto Matala. First task, drive up and over the mountains - in gale force winds!!!

Every body ready!?

Up at the tops... In the clouds!

Next stop Chania, the capitol of Crete.
Luckily the rains had stopped for a while, while we walked around the old town doing the touristy stuff!

The old harbour and town wall.

We stopped for a bite to eat - toasted sandwiches. The ladies took the sunshine seats!

I took the English, Stef the American and Sarah the Mediteranian.
Super sandwiches... They didn't last long enough to photograph them!

But Anna did photograph her birthday present to me - a silver bracelet.

After Chania we drove onto Rethymnon and then South over the mountains again.

We made a stop in Spili. A beautiful little village at the foot of Mt Vorizi.
It has a lovely little center with lots of water features.

From Spili we had another hour to get to Matala.
On the way you pass over a hill that over looks the bay of Timbaki. The waves were strong!

We tried to get in at Hotel Di Matala - Harula's, but she wasn't there!
So we turned around and went back to Pitsidia and found a room there.

Then we walked into the old village center and had something to eat. The ladies were friendly and very hospitable.

I took the octopus! Very nice.
Stef took the chicken.
